Person over board

Steps to follow if a person falls overboard:

1. Immediately call out man overboard.

2. If you have a Global Positioning System (GPS) press the man overboard button or take a note of you latitude and longitude.

3. Manoeuvre the vessel so the propeller is away form the person.

4. Throw a lifebouy or other floating object.

5. Make sure you can see the person at all times. If you loose site of them it may be very difficult to find the person again.

6. Approach the person upwind or into the waves so you can manoeuvre at slow speeds with out being swamped.

7. Inform the crew of the side of the vessel you are going to pick up the person on.

8. Stop the vessel as the person approaches the beam of the vessel to avoid injury by the propeller.

9. Pull the person from the water.

10. Check the person for injury and especially hypothermia (see the following section on hypothermia).
